Khatam is the Persian marquetry, a mosaic-like inlay; it is the art of incrustation of objects with specific patterns (generally symmetrical shapes), using different kinds of thin wood sticks and some other materials like brass, camel bones and ivory. Gold or silver can also be used.

The wooden sticks are assembled and glued in a strict order to form geometrical patterns. At times, cylinders of these glued sticks are cut into smaller cylinders and then compressed until they dry between two wooden surfaces, before being cut for the last time, into very thin tranches. Finally, these tranches are plated and glued on the desired object, before lacquer finishing .

الختم الفارسي أو الماركتريه هوتطعيم الخشب وتغطيته بطبقة رقيقة ذات أشكال هندسية معينة مكونة من أنواع مختلفة من الأخشاب مثل خشب الساج، الأبنوس، السدر، والبرتقال بالإضافة لمواد أخرى مثل العاج , الاصداف ,عظام الجمال ,النحاس وأحيانا الذهب والفضة .

يوجد هذا الفن بلمسات مختلفة أيضا في بلدان عديدة أخرى مثل سوريا ,اليابان,  داغستان و ايطاليا.
